Pistons coach Casey recounts overcoming racism, says we're still not where we need to be

Sports helped Detroit Pistons head coach Dwane Casey overcome racism as he grew up in Kentucky in the 1960s.

He remembers seeing the n-word in the second-hand books his segregated school got from the white school. He remembers fighting kids who called him the n-word when the schools integrated and later becoming lifelong friends with some of those kids, once they realized he wasn’t what they’d been told about black people.

Amherstburg Community Foundation hosts second in its "Thought Leaders" speaker series

The Amherstburg Community Foundation (ACF) heard from world-renowned urbanist Gil Penalosa in August and debated some of his ideas last week. Pistons coach Dwane Casey kicks off Amherstburg Freedom Museum series

Dwane Casey is proving to be a game changer both on and off a National Basketball Association court.

It was Casey as the head coach who set the table for the Toronto Raptors’ run to an NBA title last spring and now he’s charged with resurrecting the Detroit Pistons to glory.

Landing an NBA head coach as a guest speaker for a new initiative by the Amherstburg Freedom Museum is certainly quite a coup.

Amherstburg - Be the town that says YES

Amherstburg - Be the town that says YES

Studies have shown as humans we actually have a bias for the status quo. We tend to fear loss more than we value gain, so people often say “no” to new ideas.

But to create an even better Amherstburg we need to change from being largely about short-term personal interests to forward-thinking public interests, from small interest projects to big picture opportunities. In other words, saying “yes” to ideas instead of saying “no.”

BLOG - Get Woke

BLOG - Get Woke

The new Amherstburg Community Foundation is woke - definition: “a slang term, a byword for social awareness”.

Admittedly the term “woke” refers more to issues concerning social and racial justice, but I also believe it can stand for other things that intersect with those two issues. For instance climate change, better parks, walkable streets, civic leadership - things that can make or break the sustainability, healthiness and inclusiveness of communities like Amherstburg.
